お天気の話は好きですか？

天気予報

天気予報は毎日スマホでチェックする方が増えましたね。それと同時にテレビや動画でわざわざ天気予報を見ることが減って日本語ですら天気関連の言葉を耳にする機会が減りました。

英語で今日は晴れだねとか、雨だね、とか言える方は多いと思います。それだけ言えれば問題ないと思っています。ただ、基本的な知識として天気予報で聞くような基本的な単語や表現はいくつか知っておくと便利ですのでシェアします。

私の勤める外資系企業でも、「いい天気だね」とか「寒いね」とか普段はそんな程度のことしか天気の話題にならないですが、ときどき地震が起きたり、台風が来たりするときにはいつもと違う単語が必要になってきます。

お天気を語ろう

気温: Temperature

• Nighttime temperature can exceed 25 degrees Celsius in summer.（25度を超えうる）
• The temperature is expected to soar tomorrow.（急上昇すると見込まれる）

気圧: Atmosphere/air pressure

• A typhoon with a central pressure of 980 hectopascal is approaching Shikoku area. （中心気圧）
• Trough （気圧の谷）
• A pressure pattern (気圧配置）
• High atmosphere/air pressure （高気圧）
• Low atmosphere/air pressure （低気圧）

風速: Wind speed 

• The typhoon Tembin is expected to reach Kanto area with winds of 40 m/s
• The wind is blowing at 30 meters per second.

湿度：Humidity

• It is betting very humid as the typhoon approaches to Japan.
• The humidity is 90% at the moment.（湿度）
• It’s really muggy today. （蒸し暑い）

降水確率：Chance of Precipitation 

• The chance of rain is 30% throughout the day.（降水確率）
• The level of precipitation in the summer was very low and now we are suffering from a water shortage.（降水量）

震度：Seismic Intensity

• There was an earthquake measuring 4 on Japanese seismic intensity scale.（日本の震度４）
• Small magnitude 3.4 quake hits 4 miles northwest of Andover, Kansas, United States around noon. (Earthquake News and Global Seismic Reportsより)

耐震性：Aseismatic

• Timber houses in Japan call for aseismatic requirements. (耐震基準）
• This building is already 40 years old but designed to withstand earthquakes of magnitude 5. (M５に耐えられる設計）
• His apartment has only 80% of the required strength to withstand earthquakes.

ぱっと思い出せたら嬉しい単語

cold, hot, warm, rain, snow などの他に、普段使わないけどとっさに思い出せたら嬉しい単語を少しシェアします。

• bitter (very cold)
• chilly (肌寒い、ひんやりする）
• crispy (cold and dry)
• sleet （みぞれ）
• hail (ひょう）
• gale (強風）
• overcast （曇り空）
• drizzle (小雨）
• sprinkle (小雨）
• muggy  (蒸し暑い）
• sweltering （うだるような暑さ）

まとめ

普段はあまり必要のないこれらの単語ですが、台風が近づいてきたり、地震があったりして外国人の同僚に説明をしたほうが良い時にはこうした単語を知っていると便利です。自分のボキャブラリーで大きな台風が来ると伝えることはできますが、ちょっとした単語を知っているとより正確に、現実味をもって伝えることができます。電車が運転を見合わせるとか、台風だから危険をおかして出社しなくていいよ、とか親切に伝えたいですね。
